South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation

The South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation is an institute based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was founded in 1964 and formalised in 1979 as the National Youth Orchestra Foundation. The organization has hosted annual orchestra courses, concerts, international and national tours and workshops for young musicians making it one of South Africa’s most successful music institutions.

The South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO) Foundation aims to inspire young musicians to pursue the highest standards of musical performance. The institute invites young South African musicians to attend its programs regardless of financial or geographical barriers. ARCO has been working with SANYO since December 2017 when the first group of SANYO tutors and staff spent the day playing side-by-side with the ARCO students at MICM. This was followed by SANYO hosting “What it takes” viola, double bass courses and orchestra courses in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Cape Town in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. ARCO students and teachers were an integral part of these courses, receiving substantial support from SANYO and ARCO to participate.
